About Matraea

Registered midwives Selina Boily and Kate Koyote have been providing care to families in the Cowichan Valley for ten years. Their passion, commitment and expertise at birthing babies and in supporting new families has always been underscored by the dream of creating a multidisciplinary health care centre fostering the health and wellbeing of all families in the Valley. The Matraea Centre is the realization of that dream.

Located on the corner of Craig and Kenneth Street in downtown Duncan, the building was built in 1923. It was the former Centre of Attention School of Beauty, and prior to that, the Williams and Davies Law Office. It was originally built by BC Tel as their switchboard office. This impressive heritage brick building has long been admired as one of the most interesting architectural buildings in Duncan and is a landmark in the community.

The Centre integrates professionals and services that are both family and community centered, accessible and conveniently located. Matraea Centre’s professional directory includes: The Cowichan Midwifery Group—Registered Midwives Kate Koyote, Selina Boily, Jane Ballaro, Talia McKenzie and Sarah Atkinson; Natural Harmony Chinese Medicine, owned and operated by Kim Cooper RTCMP and practicing with Denise D'Fantis RTCMP, both leading acupuncturists in the Valley; certified nutritionist and fitness instructor Kathleen Neilson’s Nourish Health and Wellness, and Naturopathic Physician, Dr. Rikst Attema. Co-owner of the centre, Nika Stafford, carries on the Centre of Attention legacy offering natural hairstyling and esthetics in an elegant salon on the ground floor of the building. Family Counsellor Bronwen Smith, Life Coaching by Sheila Walmsley and Massage Therapists Penny Chandler and Rachel Chandler provide care at Matraea Centre.

Matraea Centre provides a community classroom as well: a spacious studio for hourly rental. Pre and Post Natal Yoga, Fitness classes, Belly Dancing, Prenatal Classes, Mothering Groups, and other related community and educational events are regularly scheduled.

The Centre is also the home of Matraea Mercantile, a quaint and airy boutique, specializing in home birth kits, cloth diapers, specialty herbs and teas, and other delights for mom and baby.

Please see Matraea Mercantile’s website for full classroom and event schedule. Enter your email address in the Newsletter section of the homepage to sign up for the Matraea Centre newsletter for information about new products, special offers and community events.
